Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2 – Highway Maintenance Specialist (Split Position) (Multiple Positions)
Oregon Department of Transportation
Delivery & Operations Division – Region 2
District 3

 

Salary: $4,207 – $5,842 (Per month)

 

The role: 

Do you want to use your skills to make a difference? Join us as a highway maintenance specialist to help keep Oregon’s roads and travelers safe! As part of our team, you will operate equipment necessary to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges and structures. In this split position, you will work with Region 2 striping crew from approximately May 1 through October 31 and the Salem maintenance crew from November 1 through April 30. You will also help with emergency cleanup and traffic control after incidents, storms, spills and more! Apply today!

A day in the life:

·         Perform manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.

·         Operate a wide variety of light and heavy equipment.

·         Maintain drainage systems, dig and clean ditches, repair culverts, inlets and erosion.

·         Repair guardrails, barriers, milepost markers, delineators and fences.

·         Set up traffic control operations and control and flag the traveling public and work crews.

·         Complete weather related operations including snow removal, plowing, deicing and sanding.

·         Dispose of debris, clear brush and mow grass.

·         Apply specific pesticide and herbicidal sprays on vegetation along roadways.

·         Complete minor service and repair of equipment, tools and motorized equipment.

·         Apply, maintain, remove or replace roadway striping and legends.

·         May be required to walk, stand, bend and stoop for extended periods of time, lift up to 60 pounds and may be exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals.

·         May be required to work long hours or travel overnight and may need to be available at any time including weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Minimum qualifications:

One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work;

OR

Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.

 

Special qualifications:

This position requires a maximum 45 minute response time to 2785 25th Street, Salem, OR 97302 for emergency call-outs during the summer season.

This position requires a maximum 45 minute response time to 885 Airport Rd SE, Salem OR 97301 for emergency call-outs during the winter season.

Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

A current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL-A) is preferred.

Right of way, highway maintenance or construction experience.

Winter maintenance experience such as sanding, deicing or using snow blowers or snowplows.

Experience using hand tools and operating light and heavy equipment such as tractors, excavators, loaders or dump trucks.

Experience working in conditions that may be hazardous.

Experience completing basic mechanical repairs on light and heavy vehicles or equipment.

Experience performing pavement markings and legend work.
