Position Summary

VECRA, Inc. is seeking Certified Medical Coders (Full-Time and Part-Time) to join our team in providing expert coding services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The ideal candidates will be experienced in coding, recoding, abstracting, analyzing, and assembling medical record data with a focus on the VA's specific needs. This role requires a deep understanding of ICD-10 CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems to accurately assign codes based on provider documentation.

As a Certified Medical Coder, you will work remotely to ensure that medical records are coded accurately for a variety of encounter types, including outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and specialty services. You will utilize the appropriate systems and software required by the VA to maintain and follow coding guidelines, and ensure the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency in all coding activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Code Medical Records: Accurately assign ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, CPT, HCPCS, modifiers, and units based on provider documentation for multi-specialty outpatient clinical encounters, emergency room visits, same-day surgeries, inpatient stays, and rounds.
  • Maintain Coding Standards: Ensure coding is done in accordance with the latest VA, CMS, AHA, AMA, and NCHS guidelines. For instances of uncertainty, follow Veterans Health Administration Coding Guidelines.
  • Code Outpatient and Inpatient Encounters: Code outpatient encounters, including radiology, lab services, surgical services, and inpatient episodes such as professional services and admissions.
  • Use VA Systems: Utilize the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) or other VA systems for coding, as required.
  • Achieve Accuracy: Maintain a coding accuracy rate of at least 95%, as well as meet required performance timelines and deadlines.
  • Adhere to Policies: Follow local VA coding policies and procedures, including the use of the 1995 or 1997 Evaluation and Management guidelines.
  • Handle Specialized Coding: Code a variety of specific cases including Veteran Tortfeasor Claims, Workers’ Compensation, Military Health System beneficiaries, non-VA Fee Services, and other specialized claims.
  • Data Entry & Documentation: Complete necessary data entry using the encoder system and ensure all required data items are reviewed and entered into VA systems.
  • Confidentiality & Compliance: Ensure that all coding and documentation are in compliance with HIPAA regulations and VA security policies. Maintain a private and secure workspace to protect PHI/PII.
  • Performance Monitoring: Participate in regular performance reviews to ensure accuracy and meet the required turnaround time for each encounter/record type.

Qualifications & Required Skills

  • Certification: Current certification as a Medical Coder (CCS, CCS-P, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or equivalent).
  • VA Experience: At least 2 years of experience coding for the VA or in a similar healthcare setting, including experience with required VA coding systems.
  • Knowledge of Coding Guidelines: Proficiency in ICD-10 CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems, and a strong understanding of applicable coding guidelines from organizations such as the NCHS, CMS, AMA, and AHA.
  • Coding Accuracy: Ability to achieve a minimum of 95% accuracy in coding assignments, with attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience working with VA systems (VistA) and other required coding software and applications. Must be comfortable using Windows 10 and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Security Clearance: Must hold or be able to obtain a VA security clearance and have no more than a 24-month break in service from a government position.
  • Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Work Independently: Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Remote Work Requirements: Must have access to high-speed internet and a private, secure work area to protect PHI/PII and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

Education & Licenses

  • Required: Certification as a Medical Coder (CCS, CCS-P, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or equivalent).
  • Preferred: ICD-10 certification and annual recertification with AAPC or AHIMA.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to maintain required training on an annual basis or as mandated by the government.
  • Must ensure that all corporate or government-issued computer equipment is maintained in a secure and clean environment and returned upon leaving the position.
  • Workdays and hours are flexible, but must meet the needs of the position and contract.
