The Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) Sacerdote Post-Baccalaureate Assistant Museum Educator offers a recent college graduate the opportunity to grow their skills as a museum educator and learn about the museum field and museum education through direct professional experience. Across a two-year term, the Sacerdote Post-Baccalaureate Assistant Museum Educator will work within the Department of Museum Education to support audience learning, engagement, and programming at SCMA. The Assistant Museum Educator will provide direct gallery teaching, administrative, and program support for a broad range of activities and initiatives, including experiences for Smith students, gallery teaching for K-12 and college audiences, audience evaluation and research, and interpretive planning.
Application review will begin on Monday, February 10. Expected pay is $22/hour, depending on experience.
The expected start-date for this position is 7/1/2025
Department Administration and Program Support (70%):
Prepare and lead gallery experiences for K-12 school and college audiences; participate in trainings on gallery teaching; assist with scheduling of student and K-12 group visits
Develop, coordinate, and assess co-curricular educational and interpretive programs for Smith students
Engage in student outreach to increase participation in ongoing museum opportunities; Collaborate with campus student organizations to host programs and events at the Museum
Support coordination and facilitation of programs for family and community audiences, including Second Fridays
Support interpretative projects, resources, and education needs related to the SCMA collection, exhibitions, and installations.
Assist with space reservations and service requests for public programs and events; Generate supply orders and catering requests
Participate in departmental and interdepartmental meetings, contributing to the planning of SCMA education programs
Provide support as needed for mailings and organizing program documentation; Assist in organization of shared workroom and storage spaces
Other tasks as assigned
Special projects (20%):
Develop, propose, and implement an education project that connects audiences to SCMA's collection and aligns with SCMA's mission and department goals (with supervisor support and mentorship)
Coordinate project needs and collaborate with internal and external partners
Develop an evaluation plan to assess project impact
Professional Development (10%):
Participate in workshops, trainings, and class sessions on gallery teaching, educational pedagogy, and/or museum studies
Represent SCMA at local, regional, and national meetings, workshops, lectures, conferences, and/or other learning opportunities that support the interests of the individual and department, as approved by Associate Director of Education and Interpretation
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree completed within the past 5 years (and have not yet pursued or earned a Master's degree) and a commitment to ongoing learning
At least 1 year of experience working with children, students, families, and/or adults in a museum, arts, school, and/or non-profit setting
An interest in learning about museum education and engaging with a diversity of museum visitors and collaborators
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively and work independently to meet deadlines
Available to work evening programs (4-8pm) 1-2x/month
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or field of study in education, studio art, art history, or similar field
At least two semesters of experience in gallery teaching and/or group facilitation; Familiarity with object-based and inquiry-based learning
Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Proficiency working within Google Suite and similar computer applications
