Job Description

The Consumer Protection Section, Consumer Fraud Unit is seeking a Paralegal  to join our tight knit team of professionals. This position will offer the right candidate a variety of work, with half of the assignment working with section attorneys and state agency stakeholders to manage a heavy volume of fraudulent filings and the other half of the assignment more typical entry-level paralegal work. This position is open only to residents of Colorado.

The Consumer Fraud Unit enforces the Colorado Consumer Protection Act (“CCPA”), C.R.S 6-1-101 et seq. and other consumer protection statutes. From large multistate investigations into international corporations, to fly-by-night fraudsters targeting vulnerable populations, the Consumer Fraud Unit works hard to protect Coloradans against all manner of deceptive, fraudulent, and other unfair business practices. We investigate, we negotiate, we litigate, and we secure relief on behalf of consumers. 

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This Paralegal  position will be dedicated, 50% of the time, to providing professional and technical assistance to the Consumer Fraud (CF) unit attorneys by supporting the unit’s work relating to fraudulent entity filings with the Colorado Secretary of State. The Paralegal must have outstanding organizational skills to manage the heavy volume of fraudulent entity filings, which involves organizing files and documents, and tracking mailings to entities. The Paralegal also drafts standard template notices, works with CF attorneys to conduct additional investigation when necessary, and communicates with CF attorneys and the Secretary of State, as well as the public regarding the fraud filings work. 

 

The other 50% of the job will involve supporting the Consumer Fraud unit and other units in the Consumer Protection (CP) section, including calendaring deadlines, formatting documents, providing general litigation support, preparing exhibits and notebooks for trial, assisting attorneys in managing discovery and reviewing evidence, performing document review and document management, and assisting with pretrial preparation, case management, and e-filing consistent with court rules and Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure.

This is a term-limited position that is expected to last no more than 18 months from the hire date. The successful candidate will be required to waive rights under the state personnel system.

Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in the Department of Law, Consumer Protection Section. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Experience Only

Two years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources. 

OR

Education

Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution.

OR

A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school 

 

Necessary Competencies:  

  • Requires proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. 

  • The successful candidate must have outstanding organizational skills.

Conditions of Employment:

 
  • Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. 
  • This unit offers flexible work arrangements. New employees are generally expected to work in-office 2-3 days per week. After a successful onboarding and training period, employees will be required to work in-office a minimum of one day per week, although additional in-offices days may be required depending on the week and the project. Please note that flexible work arrangements may change at any time based on business needs.
